Description
The research that led to the work described here was initiated during the winter of 2010 by informal discussions at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in the beautiful countryside surrounding Oxford. That numerical methods for optimization and the simulation of partial-differential equations using the finite-element method need to solve systems with similar structure is nothing new. Until recently, the selection of iterative methods for symmetric and quasi-definite systems was probably reduced to MINRES and SYMMLQ, which do not exploit the structure beyond symmetry.
